Hannya is old fashioned. It is not necessarily a strength; he is aware of that. He does not need Shikijou's occasional laughter and teasing, calling him "old man," to make him aware that being traditional does not mean being better.
That does not make him like trains. Would any of them listen, would any of them care, he might mumble about new-fangled inventions and what powers them. He might even grumble that the rocking is worse than the ocean and the noise is worse than the rocking.
As it is, he settles into one of the seats and closes his eyes. He takes a deep breath, calms himself. Finds a space inside that the rocking and the noise cannot touch, cannot disturb, cannot unsettle.
Shikijou settles in next to him. "Well, pops, how you holding up?"
"I am as well as could be expected," he replies.
"Don't worry, old man. It'll be over soon. We'll be back in Tokyo again. The old stomping grounds."
"Yes," he says. His gaze slides to look at Aoshi, who has settled into a window seat and is watching their country pass by.
Aoshi is, as usual, unaffected.
